About us

The
Keep Winter Cool initiative in Australia is led by a partnership
between the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council (ARCC),
the Australian Alps Liaison Committee (AALC), and the Australian
Ski Areas Association (ASAA).
The
alpine industry and their visitors rely on good snow seasons
and a healthy alpine environment. While the alpine industry
is only a small contributor to greenhouse gas emissions,
these three peak body groups decided that it was important
that the alpine industry take a responsible leadership role.

The Keep
Winter Cool initiative has three essential aims:
- To raise
community awareness of the potential effects of climate change
on alpine environments and snow sports;
- To demonstrate
a commitment by alpine area managers and snow sport industries
to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions;
- To encourage
others to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in
all aspects of their life, thus effecting attitudinal change.
The initiative
was launched by the Victorian Minister for Environment, the Hon.
John Thwaites, MP, at the Alpine Resorts Sustainability Forum,
"Leading Atitudinal Change", held in Melbourne in April
2006.
It builds
on the successful North American Keep Winter Cool campaign led
by the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC) and the National
Ski Areas Association (NSAA). These organisations have very generously
allowed us to use their material - including the Keep Winter Cool
slogan, logo and information.
